  • The Facts About Government

    The Facts About Government

Having worked twice at the Nigerian Presidential villa and once at the British Parliament, if there is anything I have learnt, it is that it is impossible to over inform a leader. You can under inform him, but no matter how much information you give a leader, you cannot give him too much information.

In today’s world, strength and weakness are gauged differently than they were, say in 1984. In the millennial age in which we live in, information is power and lack of information is weakness.

My concern is that there are a lot of weaknesses in Nigeria’s seat of power because not enough information is being given to President Muhammadu Buhari.

I, like other Nigerians, have heard or read reports of ministers in President Buhari’s cabinet being afraid to challenge him or disagree with him. Perhaps unawares, the minister of state for petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, corroborated these reports in a recorded YouTube video now circulating where he revealed that the President ignores his ministers when they bring up issues that he does not want to discuss.

Having such anodyne personalities around you just means that you are living in a bubble, seeing things as you want them to be and not as they are.

On Friday May 20th, 2016, Dr. Yemi Kale, the Statistician General of the Federation and head of the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics revealed that Nigeria’s economy had not grown in the first quarter of the year but had rather shrunk by 0.36%, the worst contraction in 25 years!

Since the announcement was made, there has been various reactions with pundits pointing at this or the other as being the cause of this setback. But I am convinced beyond any reasonable doubts that this negative trend owes more to President Muhammadu Buhari’s utterances on our economy and polity than to any other single causative factor.

The bigger problem is that even though I suspect that his ministers know that what I have just said is true, they would rather pander to the President and like Dr. Chris Ngige, say that Nigerians are lucky to have President Buhari (obvious Ngige does not know the meaning of luck).

In the last eleven months, the President had traversed the globe and has spoken about Nigeria’s economy as if he was the chief undertaker of our polity rather than the chief marketer that he is meant to be.

Of what benefit is it to the President’s agenda or to Nigeria’s economic well-being for him to go to foreign nations and instead of highlighting the positive things that are happening in Nigeria, he begins to regale his hosts with the most unsavory stories about Nigeria.

And some of the stories the President tells are just that-tales.

They are not factual. At best they are arguable. You go to India for a summit where other world leaders are competing with you for the attention of venture capitalists and foreign investors and while your counterparts are talking about how great their countries are, you tell the audience how everybody in your country is corrupt except you and oh, can they come and invest in your country?

Only a foolish investor would go and invest in a country whose President thinks his citizens are ‘criminals’ (as the President said to the Telegraph of UK in February) and whose officials are ‘fantastically corrupt’ (as the President said in agreement with British PM David Cameron when questioned by Sky News).

The President speaks on the Nigerian economy and polity without any filters and his comments are causing his chickens to roost with devastating consequences for all of us.

Never in the history of Nigeria has there been such a divestment of investment as we have seen in the past year.

Truworths has pulled out of Nigeria, Virgin Atlantic has closed up shop, Iberia is pulling out, RenCap is pulling funds from Nigeria, both Alquity Investment Management Ltd. and Duet Asset Management Ltd. are divesting their Nigeria holding. Zenith Bank laid off 1,200 staff, FCMB let go 700 employees, Ecobank sacked 50% of its top management staff. The President of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Tony Ejinkeonye revealed that in just two months 50,000 staff were laid off in Abuja alone.

The results are telling. A little over a year ago, Nigeria was projected by CNNMoney to be the third fastest growing economy in the world behind China and Qatar yet just two weeks ago the International Monetary Fund released its World Economic Outlook and Nigeria is not even among the top 15 fastest growing economies in Africa let alone the world!

And when you try to raise the alarm, the refrain from the government and its horde of unofficial spokesmen is that the downturn is caused by the fall in crude prices.

Yet this logic is flawed. The government’s own economic monitoring agency, the National Bureau of Statistics itself reported that the exponential growth Nigeria enjoyed especially from 2012 to its 2014 climax (when our economy overtook South Africa to be Africa’s largest economy) was spurred not by the oil sector, but “this growth was largely driven by improved activities in the telecommunications, building and construction, hotel and restaurant and business services” to quote the NBS.

Yes, oil accounts for something like 90-95 percent of our foreign exchange revenues but it only accounts for a mere 15% of our GDP.

The service sector and the commercial and real sector are the engine or used to be the engine of our economic growth. But these sectors are heavily capital and technology intensive and require cooperation with foreign investors and when you consistently bad mouth your economy and its regulators investor confidence tanks and the result is what we are seeing today.

I support President Buhari’s anti-corruption war but it should not be a substitute for sound economic ideas or policies.

And the way the President has carried out his anti-corruption crusade is in itself self-sabotaging and feeds the narrative of those who say that Nigeria is far too complex and dynamic a country to be run by someone who should be quietly collecting his pension.

And President Buhari’s behavior is flowing down the pyramid. There is a contagious effect in the utterances of major figures in his administration. For instance, when Vice President Osinbajo tells the world that the Jonathan administration looted $15 Billion in security contracts, many people in the West who like to read such stories to justify their hidden opinion that the Black man cannot govern himself, will clap for him.

Coming from the nation’s own Vice President, the Western press will report the news as a fact. At that level, such a statement carries the weight of an admission.

But then ask yourself, what was the entire security budget for the five years that Jonathan was President of Nigeria?

In 2011, defense and security had a budget of ₦348 billion or just over $2 billion. In 2012 it skyrocketed to ₦921 billion or $5.7 billion. It grew to ₦1.055 trillion in 2013 or $6 billion. In 2014, ₦968 billion was budgeted for defence and security or $5.8 billion. The 2015 budget was passed in April and President Jonathan handed over to President Buhari a month later so I cannot see how the previous administration could have ‘chopped’ that money.

So of the $19 billion budgeted for defence and security while former President Jonathan was in office, how could $15 billion have been looted when more than half that amount went to paying salaries?

Did Vice President Osinbajo think this accusation through?

The President and his vice with their cabinet and their political appointees are not a court. They cannot convict anybody. As such when they speak this way, what it amounts to is propagandized activity.

In an anti-corruption war one must separate activity from results. Results are convictions from a court after due and diligent prosecution. And when you look at it from that perspective, this administration has been delivering activity and not results.

For instance, then candidate Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the All Progressive Congress, had called the subsidy payments made by the Jonathan administration a fraud! They claimed that the amount was too high at ₦1.1 trillion in 2014. Well if fuel subsidy had been a fraud, the first thing that should have happened naturally when President Muhammadu Buhari took over was that the amount should have reduced, but it DID NOT reduce. As a matter of fact, Nigeria spent over $5 billion on fuel subsidy in 2015 and President Buhari was in power for most of that year!

The point I am making here is that the elections are over. President Buhari and his administration should stop tarnishing the image of Nigeria in the mistaken belief that they are rubbishing the person of former President Jonathan. The President should take in the big picture and realize that you need to be below somebody in order to pull him down.

One year has come and gone and has seemingly been wasted pointing fingers in blame instead of at solutions. The time for blame games have gone.

Only last month, President Buhari complained that the Sahara Desert was advancing southward. He should also realize that that is not the only thing going south. The Nigerian economy is going south at perhaps a faster rate and blaming others for it will never stem the tide.

The President should focus on marketing his plans and policies when he travels abroad instead of de-marketing the plans and policies of former President Jonathan’s administration.

It has been said that if you want a conversation with a habitual complainer to end abruptly, just ask him how he intends to fix the problem. That is the question Nigerians want answered by President Buhari.

Under former President Jonathan, Nigeria’s economy exploded and became the largest economy in Africa and the 24th largest economy in the world. Let it not be said that under President Buhari that economy collapsed like a pack of clouds because the hand that should have steered the ship was too busy pointing an accusing finger.

I Remain in Politics – Philomena Ihenyen

Princess (Mrs.) Philomena Okojie Ihenyen, PDP South-South Secretary was on Monday, May 9, 2016 a guest speaker at the ITV Town Hall Meeting. She delivered her lecture on “Women Participation in Politics (The Road to 2016 Election in Edo State)”.

Mrs. Ihenyen advised those present that she was here as a voice for all Edo women. Her lecture which brought to light women from past who had added value and changed history throughout the course of time in Nigeria, she also highlighted the contributions of women who had been appointed to positions of great responsibility since the second democracy which began in 1999.

She noted that those discussed were “carefully selected not just for their personal attributes and political sagacity, but for the conservative, strong, cultural and traditional societies of their origin in which male chauvinism is a trademark. Yet in spite of these cultural and traditional gender prejudices prevalent in their times and places of origin as barriers, they were undaunted and against all odds and drawbacks, excelled in their given opportunities to make the difference that have now become legendary landmarks in the political history of their nations, communities and the world at large.”

She then charged those present with the following reflections:

    • When will the Nigerian woman politician be recognized on her own merit to vie for legislative and executive offices at the highest level, as now happens in the judiciary?
    • When shall a level playing field come to be in the Nigerian political terrain, that women politician will be motivated to dare on their own to seek election to any office of their choice without looking over their shoulder to a looming male shadow?

Mrs. Ihenyen then explained that she remained in politics not to seek personal comfort, but to work hard towards the enthronement of a just social system, where hard work is adequately rewarded and poverty is alleviated to tolerable limits; to mobilize and educate every Edo woman to be politically conscious and emancipated to the point of realizing the true value of her vote and not to sell it cheaply for a “mudu” of rice or garri; to push for electoral reforms such as to establish a level playing ground for all eligible candidates irrespective of gender, tribe or status; to see that true democracy is entrenched in our body-polity, such that the very brightest and best amongst us emerge to leadership position at various levels; and finally to see Edo state translate its enormous potential into reality and become truly the heartbeat of the nation.

She emphasized that with the large number of women voters, more women can be elected into office.

Mrs. Ihenyen is a well-rounded individual and she remains active in politics. She is tagged by a large following of women who believe in her ability to function as deputy governor of the state.  Mrs. Iheyen is fully equipped with the background, qualifications, education and meets all constitutional requirements to be the deputy governor of Edo State as was seen in Ekiti State and now Rivers State. She also comes from the Edo Central Senatorial District where the Peoples Democratic Party zoned the position of Deputy Governor.

Also present at the town hall meeting were, Mrs. Lindsay Sorae, the PDP State Women Leader, Mrs. Okosun, the PDP Edo Central Senatorial Women Leader and Mrs. Maria Osamoje, PDP Edo North Senatorial Women Leader and many others.

    May God bless Edo State.

PDP Edo 2016: Edebiri begins Party Tour

Chief Solomon Iyobosa Edebiri visited the State PDP Secretariat yesterday, Monday, April 25, 2016 to officially inform the State Working Committee of his intention to contest the forth coming gubernatorial election on the platform of the PDP.

In his speech, he took the members of the State working committee down memory lane indicating that the ideals upon which Edo State was founded from the defunct Bendel State has been lost to bad governance.

He lamented that all the industries inherited by Edo state such as Bendel line, Edo Pharmaceuticals, Bendel Insurance and Bendel United amongst others have become moribund, a situation he described as unacceptable due to job losses which has put indigenes of Edo State under severe economic pressure.

He promised to reverse this trend if given the PDP ticket which he promised will become a winning ticket with him as flag bearer. ‘If you give me a basketball, it is just a ball, but in the hands of Michael Jordan it is a basketball worth millions of dollars. A tennis ball in my possession is worth nothing but worth millions in the hands of the Williams sisters. A football on my foot is worth nothing but can be turned into millions when given to Osaze Odimengie. Therefore, Mr. Chairman, a PDP ticket in my hands is worth victory for the PDP.’

Chief Solomon Iyobosa Edebiri promised to be a true party man and a unifier.

Responding, the State PDP chairman commended Chief Edebiri for his matured and intelligent speech that was issue based and devoid of personal attacks on other aspirants and admonished him to continue in that path as he goes about his sensitization tour of the State. He noted that Chief Edebiri was the first aspirant in the history of the party to start his sensitization tour from the State Secretariat; a situation he described as admirable. He pointed out that with the credentials, intelligence and maturity of Chief Edebiri, he was qualified to vie for the position of President of the country.

Chief Edebiri also visited the Secretariat of the State Youth Council where he was received by the Chairman Comrade Ajayi.  He expressed to the Youth Chairman of his desire to help sensitize the youths to abhor electoral violence because the youths were the ones who are the victims of such violence.

Rather, he admonished the youths to insist on a transparent process where credible candidates will emerge in all political parties. This he noted will make the issue of electoral violence a thing of the past. He promised to embark on serious capacity development that will make the youths economically dependent.

The State Youth Chairman noted that Chief Edebiri is consistent in his beliefs and opinions which makes him a credible man with integrity. He wished him well and promised to embark on a state wide sensitization tour to educate the youths on the negative effect of electoral violence.

Chief Edebiri was accompanied by members of his campaign organization during his visits.

  • CHIEF EDEBIRI’S BIRTHDAY WISH

    CHIEF EDEBIRI’S BIRTHDAY WISH

    By Barr. Kingsley Idahosa

Chief Iyobosa Solomon Edebiri, MON on Friday, April 22, 2016 rather than throw a lavish party for his birthday as is customary, preferred to spend his time with the less privileged and the disadvantaged in our society. He started his day by paying a visit to the Irrua Specialist Hospital where he met lots of indigent Edos who were unable to pay their medical bills and had been abandoned by their family and friends. Chief Edebiri as part of his good deeds helped pay off hospital bills so patients could be discharged. One of such cases was a three-month old baby whose mother had passed away during child birth and the father had abandoned in the hospital.

Chief Edebiri also visited the Abeni Orphanage Home in Benin City and the Oronsaye Maternity and Orphanage Home where he donated cash and gift items to assist in the well-being of the children.

ISE as he is fondly called visited the Oronsaye Skills Acquisition Center where he promised that the Solomon Edebiri Centre for Change will partner with them to help the youths acquire the needed skills to prepare them to succeed in life.

Over the years, Chief Edebiri has distinguished himself as a politician with a difference and worth emulating by others. With the likes of him, the world will no doubt be a better place for mankind. A flash back on some of his activities over the years include but are not limited to the following: Between 2002 to 2003 Chief Edebiri gave more than 2 million Naira to support local farmers in Edo south; In 2012 he supported widows in Edo state with startup capital up to the tune of 2 million Naira; In 2012 immediately after the governorship election which Chief Edebiri lost to the incumbent governor, he bought drugs and paid hospital bills running into millions for indigent patients at both the Central Hospital in Benin City and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital; In 2013, Chief Edebiri sponsored more than 30 students from various secondary schools in Edo State to South Africa for a discovery tour.

Between 2011 to 2013, Chief Edebiri sponsored the annual “Catch Them Young” Quiz Competition, an intellectual program worth 3 million Naira; In 2013, Chief Edebiri donated towards the construction of hostels at the Catholic Mental Health Challenge Centre in Esan West Local Government in Edo Central. In 2013, Chief Edebiri built a standard Student Common Room worth Millions of Naira for the College of Education, Ekiadolor, Edo state.

Between 2011 to 2013 Chief Edebiri bought drugs running into millions for Sickle Cell patients in Edo state; More than 50 less privileged persons currently enjoy scholarship from Chief Edebiri. Chief Edebiri Solely organized the centenary celebration of the last independent Oba of the Benin Kingdom, Oba Ovonramen N’Ogbaisi in January, 2014. Chief Edebiri also donated towards the construction of the Auchi Polytechnic building for Catholic students in 2013.

Between 2000 and 2004 Chief Edebiri solely sponsored Bendel United Football Club having over 300 Edo state indigenes on his payroll in Edo state. Chief Edebiri was also the sole sponsor of the then Edo Football League cutting across the 18 local government councils in an effort geared towards catching them young.

As the President of the West African Welding Federation, Chief Dr. Solomon Edebiri used his position and influence in the organization to site the Nigerian Institute of Welding in Edo State currently under construction. The Centre will play host to most Welding activities in the West African Sub Region. It is Located at Obayantor near Ologbo in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government area of Edo State. The Centre will be second to none in Africa when completed.

Chief Edebiri is a known philanthropist per excellence no one can deny.

We wish Chief Iyobosa Solomon Edebiri, Edo State’s illustrious son a happy birthday once again. It’s our prayer that God in His infinite mercy will preserve his life, grant his heart desires and give him many more fruitful years, in Jesus Name, Ise.

  • PDP EDO STATE CRISIS: THE FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY

PDP EDO STATE CRISIS: THE FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY

The crisis in the PDP cannot be ignored. With a great chance of winning the general elections for the Governor’s seat the PDP certainly must get it right this time around.

The fight between Bar. Sado and Chief Dan Orbih led to the emergence of Late Bar. Ikhabafe, it was the only way to bring peace to the party as an agreement could not be reached between the two. When Bar. Ikhabafe passed on Chief Dan Orbih took over his seat as PDP Edo State Chairman in 2009 and was affirmed again in 2011 for a second term.

The issue is not if Chief Dan Orbih is qualified to contest for the seat for a third time, but if returning him back to the esteem position is worth it for the party. Keeping in mind that he has spent at least six years in office it is Chief Dan Orbih’s performance that is under review and although the party constitution agrees to up to two terms “63(1) TENURE OF OFFICE OF PARTY OFFICERS – All National, Zonal, State, Local Government Area and Ward Officers of the Party shall hold office for a term of four years and shall be eligible for re-election for another term and no more.” The same does not state that a chairman or any elected officer must return for a second term. The members of the PDP have a right to vote out any officer they believe has not performed up to their expectations and vote in someone else.

In an article published on social media by Mr. Chris Nehikhare it stated that Chief Dan Orbih did not play ethnic politics. Members of the PDP in Edo North disagree.

According to the Party’s zoning policies when positions are zoned to a particular constituency if for any reason that position is vacated before the end of its term, that a person from the same zone should occupy the position. The position of Organizing secretary was zoned to Owan West, however when the position was vacated before its term ended the position was never filled by anyone from the same zone, what Chief Dan Orbih did was create a position that did not exist in the Constitution called “welfare officer” and a close female friend of his from Etsakor occupied that position. In 2014 when the position of Senatorial chairman zoned to Owan West was vacated before its term ended no one from the same zone occupied this position rather Chief Dan Orbih gave the position to his friend Hon. Tenebe also from Etsakor leaving Owan West without a voice in the Exco.

In fact by the time Chief Dan Orbih was done, the office of the State Chairman, the senatorial chairman, the senatorial Woman leader and the organizing secretary aka welfare officer all came from the Etsakor area. The zoning policies of the PDP was borne out of the interest of fairness, something which Chief Dan Orbih has greatly violated.

With everything that has gone wrong in the party one cannot ignore the involvement of a major player, the former Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih pending a new congress to elect officials for the party.

Since Chief Dan Orbih was made chairman, in fact imposed on the party, the party has been on a steady losing streak. Now Chris Nehikhare claimed in his write up that he has been an opposition to the ACN/APC and that he has been a nightmare to Governor Oshiomhole. No one can deny that he (Orbih) has not held a lot of press conferences, made a lot of videos and shouted about the ills going on in Edo State or done well as the publicity secretary, but all the noise has still not earned us a win. Another argument may be that we got seats in the last election, but everyone knows that that was due to then President Goodluck Jonathan  and when he lost his election we lost all the House of Assembly seats and one house of representative position in the Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Constituency also in Edo South, We lost two seats only in Edo Central due to their doggedness, We lost all house of representative seats in Edo North, the senate seat in Edo North and five out of six seats in the House of Assembly election, the same Edo North District which Chief Dan Orbih comes from.

Chief Dan Orbih has never voted in any election, we question if he has a voters card. His vote has never been counted among winning or losing votes. Every election he claims that the youths have barricaded him in his  home at Ogbonna, when we sent scouts to verify this information we found Chief Dan Orbih drinking champagne and eating bush meat, while the rest of us fought in our units for the party to win. Chief Dan Orbih has never won his unit, his ward, or his LGA; he has never been on ground to make sure that his party wins. Money sent for the party to work is kept by this man who could care less if we won or lost.

A State Chairman who cannot win his unit, how is he expected to win the state. The majority of the people of Edo North do not believe in the ability of Chief Orbih to win this next election, he has no integrity or credibility, a sell out and a noise maker. As the saying goes “empty vessels make much noise”, this is Chief Dan Orbih, a man who has nothing to offer to the PDP or its members.

Chief Dan Orbih operated as a one man team despite his executives. He was the woman leader, treasurer, financial secretary, auditor, the organizing secretary aided by the welfare officer and most especially the Publicity secretary, many of us would without hesitation vote him into that position.

He directly violated the party’s policies and constitution by depositing party money into his personal account irrespective of the fact the Party has an official account. He never accounted for the party’s money. As we also heard recently that 500 million of the Dasuki money was deposited into his personal account for the elections last year, yet we could hardly win a seat in his District.

To cover up his tracks last week he called a meeting of some LGA chairmen where he wanted them to say that he had given them some of the Dasuki money, most of them realizing the implication of doing so refused to participate. We will be finished if prior to the elections the chairman of our dear party is picked up by the EFCC. Chief Dan Orbih is unaccountable to the members of the PDP and lacks transparency, he is arrogant, disrespectful, and abusive to party members.

As a party chairman irrespective of his opinion regarding the aspirants of the party, it was his duty to remain objective. He should never have taken it upon himself to promote only one aspirant which he has done in grave error. Although, all of this began before his term expired in September 2015 and continued after he illegally made himself the caretaker committee also in violation of the party’s constitution.

Our message to the Edo people cannot be violence one which is promoted by Orbih’s aspirant. We need a candidate that actually has ideas on how to administer a state and is able to deal with the economic crisis, one that is credible and without baggage, not one that does have baggage, could not win his constituency for the House of Representative election, lost the battle of wits for the deputy seat in his previous party, chanting cult songs at rallies and preparing the state for thugs, miscreants and hoodlums to take over.

That aside, having primaries allows for the people to make the right choice, and determine who is the best person to field. We cannot develop a strategy based on violence either. To win this the Edo people have demanded for one who has the well withal. To field a person who has so much baggage and who has also admitted to being a failure since a government he was part of failed woefully would be a disaster. This is not war it is an election and we need to do it right.

It is a flawed thought to believe that only one person can do a job. It is also flawed to fail to try something new because of fear.

We should be wise in our decision, doing the same thing can definitely not bring a different result. A man who has never won his unit can certainly never win a state.

Our slogan is clear, when we say Power to the people we have a clear understanding that the power lies in the people through their vote and not one man.

    May God be our guide

The Firm further drew the Governor’s attention to the fact that the issue as to whether “Teller Deposits” and “Electronic Transfers” are liable for stamp duties is currently the subject of litigation at the Court of Appeal wherein all the Banks are involved and the actions of the Apex Bank may render a fait accompli on the Appeal. The overall aim is to ensure that this illegal fee is scraped and monies refunded to those who were charged.

Edo 2016: Court Restrains Orbih-led PDP from Conducting Congresses

BENIN – An Edo State High Court sitting in Benin yesterday restrained the leadership of the Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Chief Orbih, from conducting the party’s congresses until the hearing of the substantive matter brought before it.

It will be recalled that Mr. Ehi Osula, from Ward 12 Oredo, and others, had approached the court in Benin urging it to declare as illegal the continued stay in office of the current leadership of the party whose tenure expired on September 24, 2015.

But despite the suit the Orbih-led PDP allegedly concluded plans to conduct congresses across the 192 wards in the state on February 24, 2016, ahead of the forth coming governorship election in the state.

The claimant through his counsel Matthew Edaghese asked the court the restrain the Chief Orbih-led Exco from conducting the congresses until hearing of the motion on notice. Trial judge, Justice Ikpomnwen in his ruling granted the injunction and adjourned further hearing till February 29, 2016.

  • The World and Its Generational Mess

The World and Its Generational Mess

    By Tola Adeniyi

The history of the world and of mankind is replete with stories of wars, famine, tragedies of humongous proportions, homicides, betrayals, human sufferings and unimaginable agonies after agonies. My late good friend Apagun Oluwole Olumide who was murdered a few years ago used to quote his father as saying “we met the world in a mess and we would always leave it in a mess”. His father’s Yoruba aphorism of universal application: jugbujugbu-jagbajagba l’aba ile aye; jugbujugbu-jagbajagba na l’ama fisile sii” resonates in my ears and in my thoughts anytime I reflect on the many problems and challenges that routinely confront individuals, families, towns and cities, and nations the world over.

The Jews put it succinctly in their inspired writings” As it was in the beginning, so it is now, and ever shall it be, world without end.

Whenever you open the pages of any World History book, what stare you in the face are horrible stories of early homicides, the unending wars in the city states of Sparta, Athens, Rome, Carthage, Thermopylae, Ijaye, Owu, Ishamuro, Dahomey and Benin among several others. As cities evolved into countries and nations, wars and battles raged on more ferociously and brutishly. And the more mankind advanced in their technology, the more weapons of mass destruction came their way. And of course all wars leave in their wake needless destruction, misery and incurable bitterness and enmity.

The world has never been short of amputees and millions deformed, blinded and those made deaf by atrocities of warfare. Millions lose their loved ones, marriages crash, families are torn apart, and lots of personal properties and fortunes are destroyed.

Religion and religious intolerance have been a great part of the mess the world has always been. The moment mankind invented religion and came up with the most illogical notion that one religion was better than the other the world has never known peace and never lived in harmony. In the days of Yoruba Gods, Egyptian Gods, Persian Gods, Mexican Gods, Phoenician Gods, Igbo Gods, and the many Gods of the very many human societies, mankind lived in harmony as far as religious faiths were concerned. It was the Arabs and the Jews, the two Semitic peoples, and easily the most fiercely possessive and intolerant peoples on the face of the earth who came up with the concept of their God not willing to share ownership of followers and adherents with another God!

The notion of ‘one way and only one way’ which had degenerated from religious faith to political arena with people of the United States of America breathing down the rest of mankind with their bogus One political World Order has also set the world on fire.

As the world moves from one crazy notion to another crazy notion, and with mankind bedeviled with the idea of SUPREMACY, wild and uncontrolled and immoderate competition has continued to put a terrible wedge between one person and another, one family and another, one society and another and one country and another country.

In human relationships, all the ills that had reared their heads since the beginning of time are still regrettably with us up to this moment. Perfidy, homicide, suicide, adultery, rape, stealing, treachery, rabid jealousy, hypocrisy, kidnapping and ritual murders, and heartless deceit are still blossoming.

The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is a child play compared with what the world is putting up with now. Man marries man and woman marries woman with government consent, even in Churches! Immorality has taken a centre stage in the affairs of man. And so it was when the world was not one percent as big, as diverse, and as populated as it is now.

Divorce rates in the so-called developed world is beyond human imagination and comprehension. And lamentably, the more Churches, the more Mosques, the more Synagogues, the more Iledis, the more Temples of the over 1000 religions in the world the more immorality and faithlessness grow.

As you are reading this piece fierce wars are raging in Syria, in some other Middle east countries, in some African countries, and also in some locations in the heart of Europe. All these wars have their attendant calamities and unspeakable human suffering.

Every generation tries to improve the standard of the world, to attend to the needs of their immediate societies and to develop the world so to say. But as every generation builds with one hand, another succeeding generation pulls own what its predecessor has attained and turned full circle the hand of the clock.

Nearer home, the great Zik, the immortal Awo, the heroic Bello, and several other leaders of their generation did their best to give the country Nigeria a big start. Even with that laudable resolution there were challenges and obstacles. And as soon as the great leaders left the scene, Nigeria went back to square one! It has been one trouble after another ever since.

In corporations after corporations, some shinning stars would emerge only to be supplanted by imbeciles. It never ends.

There is therefore no exaggeration if it is said that we can only try our best. It is not ever likely that any one or any group can permanently end the ills of the world or stop the world from immersing itself in perennial mess.

Several visionary individuals have laid down their lives in their strong desires to change the way things are done in the world. Some brought new ideas in politics, religion, science and technology, economics, education and law. At the end of the day, all their efforts end up either being misinterpreted and misapplied or being completely jettisoned.

There were hungry and homeless people thousands of years ago. There are still many more homeless and hungry people in the world today. There is labour unrest here and there as there were hundreds of thousands of labour unrest in the world from time immemorial.

Whatever circumstances you are facing today, somebody somewhere has faced the same defining circumstance before.

We struggle day-in-day-out in the vein attempt that we can change the world and end the rot that it is plagued with only to find to our chagrin  out on our dying bed that the world remains majestically in the mess in which we met it..

Jagbajagba jugbujugbu l’abaye, jagbajagba jugbujugbu na la maa fisile sii!! Because, as it was in the beginning, so it is now, and ever shall it be, world without end!
