Impending dangers of Senator Godswill Akpabio’s defection to APC

    August 3, 2018.

    His Excellency,
    Adams Oshiomhole
    National Chairman
    All Progressives Congress

IMPENDING DANGERS OF SENATOR GODSWILL AKPABIO’S DEFECTION TO APC

We in the Akwa Ibom Progressives Watch (AKIPW) have noted with deep concern the broad chorus of disapproval and complete despondency amongst different strata of members of our party, the All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom state over the defection of the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio to the APC.

Our group is an integrity watch team whose support for the APC is driven by the party’s change agenda, the fight against corruption as well as the near immaculate personality of the leader of the Party, President Muhammadu Buhari. We metamorphosed from Ibom Transparency Watch under the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), working assiduously in the last seven years to entrench in the party sterling values, such as integrity, justice, accountability and transparency, which are lacking in our political system. Hence, we have been on the watch so that such persons with tendencies which violate these values are not found tip-toeing around our party.

For this reason, we feel sad, so are most members of the APC in Akwa Ibom State who looked up to our party as institution that will evict moral pervers as Senator Godswill Akpabio from position of authority, by the admission of Senator Godswill Akpabio into our party.

Senator Akpabio’s records of service show he is a spoiler everywhere he goes. In his first organisation of employment, EMIS Telecoms Nigeria Limited, Akpabio was Personal Assistant to the CEO of the company, Chief E. Okonkwo; suddenly he manipulated his boss and threw himself up as the company’s secretary. During his stint in that position, the company was defrauded to the tune of N4billion. Records suggest Akpabio was party to the fraud and must have benefited from the loot.

Your Excellency, you must be aware that Akpabio polarized ethnicity to its zenith in his bid to annihilate the Ibibio majority, and destroy the Oro ethnic nationality, when he was governor of Akwa Ibom State. In that mindless voyage, more than 80 prominent sons and daughters of the state were either kidnapped or killed; many were compelled to go on exile. Under Akpabio’s watch, an elder statesman, Gen. Edet Akpan Rtd., former DG of NYSC was kidnapped from a church. Four persons were killed during that operation. The wife of a BoT member of our party, Mrs. Sam Enwang, was kidnapped; the wife of Senator Aloysius Etok, who is now a stakeholder of our party was also kidnapped; Chief Senas Ukpanah was killed; a former deputy speaker of our state House of Assembly and member of the APC, Obong Okon Uwah was killed; mother of Mr. Udonwa, a governorship aspirant was kidnapped, killed and her naked corpse was dumped on the road, forcing the deceased’s son to dump his governorship ambition; a foremost traditional father, Edidem Ime Robert from Nsit Ubium was assassinated; an entrepreneur, Elder Paul Inyang was killed; three brothers called the Mbota brothers were killed; three brother to the televangelist Mrs. Helen Ukpabio were killed. The list of assassinations under Akpabio’s atrocious regime is endless.

Your Excellency, you may wish to call for report on Akpabio’s wild intolerance for our party members in Akwa Ibom State during his reign as governor. It is on record that Akpabio’s men masterminded the awful murder of 11 supporters of the defunct ACN in 2011 that were on a campaign visit to Ikot Ekpene. We have not forgotten how Akpabio sought to exterminate, Senator John Udoedehe, who was the governorship candidate of the ACN in 2011, over trump up charges.

You must have heard of the bare-face manipulation of the 2015 election in Akwa Ibom State against our party, by Senator Godswill Akpabio; or how Akpabio bragged on a state radio that he cross off the name of the winner of the PDP primary in Ikot Ekpene senatorial district in 2011 and replaced it with the name of Senator Aloysius Etok.

Senator Akpabio who is now seeking asylum in the APC called our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, very unprintable names during the 2015 electioneering. He ordered the immediate closure of the Ibom Airport on the day the Buhari, who was then the presidential flag – bearer of our party visited Akwa Ibom State. After our President won the 2015 election despite all their antics, Akpabio encouraged former President Goodluck Jonathan to challenge Buhari’s election victory in court.

Senator Akpabio breeds impunity wherever he goes. We strongly think he played significant role in the fall of his first love, the PDP. Akpabio’s schemes factionised the Nigerian Governors Forum, (NGF), and ultimately led to the creation of PDP Governors Forum as well as the eventual defection of five PDP governors to the APC. We have not forgotten how Senator Akpabio superintended over the NGF election where 17 votes were greater than 19.

Your Excellency, based on Akpabio’s antecedent and his dislike for our party, we strongly feel that the senate minority leader is joining the APC for many nocuous reasons. One, Akpabio is seeking an escape from prosecution for the crimes – particularly, financial, and human rights abuses – his regime committed. Two, he wants to give the party a bad image in the eyes of members of the public who looked up to the APC as the only institution that would evict Akpabio from position of authority and bring justice to those whose rights were unjustly stymied by the preponderance of his absolute powers. With his defection, members of the party and the public in extension are inured to think that the APC is a cover for plunderers of public assets. Three, Senator Akpabio wants to use our party to advance his selfish and insatiable quest for power. Four, Akpabio is on a mission to destroy APC for his man Mr. Udom Emmanuel to win a reelection in 2019. Five, Akpabio defection to the APC will provoke massive exodus of foundation members of the party to other political parties. Six, Senator Akpabio wants to catch in on the seeming feud between Mr. Chibuike Amaechi and Adams Oshiomhole to finish his oil well battle with the former Rivers state governor.

Consequently, in our honest consideration, Senator Akpabio does not deserve a welcome to APC because his despicable political idiosyncrasies dealign to the values our great party holds. In as much as much we appreciate defections like last month’s event where a former national lawmaker, Mr. Bassey Etim, defected with over 6000 people. Etim said he defected because of Senator Akpabio’s impunity which stopped his swearing in as Senator. Etim claimed that on the day he was to be sworn-in following a federal high court’s ruling; Senator Akpabio walked into the office of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, knelt down and begged him not to proceed with the swearing in.

Sir, we urge your leadership to look meticulously into the impending dangers of Senator Godswill Akpabio’s defection to our party. Also, the leadership of the party should resist the enticement of building our party structure around an individual.

We look forward to your prompt action.

Thank you for your time, Your Excellency.

    We are:

    Innocent Sylvanus
    Chairman

    Oshiomhole, Where Are Your Friends?

    By Okharedia Ihimekpen

“In the twentieth century, it is impossible for an honest man to be a critic”, so declared by our dear friend, George Steiner, the formidable European critic. Steiner, before the parochialism of Cambridge drove him to the continent, was the one literary critic who added class and élan to the intellectual life of England in the 70’s.

Armed with massive erudition and a limpid costly elegant style, Steiner was always there in seminar essays, major reviews and indeed bristling rejoinders to amateur gladiators who might want to trip him. Steiner was not interested in taking intellectual hostages.

Steiner’s target on this occasion, was George Lucas, the great Hungarian Maxist theatrician. It was Steiner’s contention that Lucas gambled away his exemplary gifts as a literary critic in the arid wasteland of Marxism. Steiner was only being less honest otherwise he ought to have known that it takes a thief to trace the footsteps of another thief on a rock. Or else in the name of which devil does he himself speak so eloquently? Steiner in this case represent our modern day Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State.

Only the other day the governor  Oshiomhole was in his usual element, as he took Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion the Esama of Benin and his son Chief Lucky Igbinedion to the cleaners over tax related issues. The governor has just enacted some retroactive laws to catch up with the duo. The Igbinedions with few others were the same elements that betrayed their political party PDP, to bankrolled Oshiomhole from political obscurity to become Edo State governor at against the interest of the People. One can recollect vividly in 2007 how Oshiomhole as a tenant in the Motel Benin Plaza, was quartered in one of the Igbinedion’s guest houses and allegedly given a grant of twenty-five million naira before the billons of naira was rolled in, to fight the PDP and installed Oshiomhole as Governor of the State.

Since his emergence as  governor of Edo State in 2008, it has been difficult not to admire the dexterity with which he has been deafly, but maximally utilizing the enormous influence and resources of his office, to consolidate his position as governor and straighten his hand within the his party APC. At the same time he enjoys tremendous goodwill, within the state traditional rulers and the cult boys which he has made key political concessions, including strategic positions of chairmen of motor parks.

A dire hard student of  Mikolo Mecheveli principle in the book the “Prince” Oshiomhole believes in the destruction of people and elements that assisted him to power, forgetting that he needs them when coming down.

Today, virtually all the civil commissioners, special advisers’, permanent Secretaries, and directors that help him to power are either sacked with ignominy, retired or demoted for daring to correct him.

It is on record that at the heels of the Federal Government bail out funds Saga Edo State government applied for a bail out fund of N10 billion naira Oshiomhole allegedly set aside the sum of N6 billion as his counterpart personal contribution to the controversial University at Iyamo while making available a paltry sum of N4 billion for the bail out for salaries and pension in the State. The resultant consequence is that the money became insufficient to pay pensioner and the bail out salaries. This has resulted to some casualties as exemplified in Egor Local Council of Edo State When the Head of Service Mr Obazele, the Permanent Secretary and other officials cried foul they were sacked.

Oshiomhole greatest headache today is the issue of his successor who will cover up for all these sins. This phobia has put him on a permanent war with his deputy Dr Egberavben Odubu, Like a bull in the China’s shop Oshiomhole has leached a rain of terror on all those associated with his deputy whether in government or out of his government. Like the godfather which he has made himself, he has lunched one Godwin Obaseki as his successor. This Obaseki sermon he has preached to all who care to listen to him, be it traditional rulers, students, and other whiles. And he has never forgot to tell them that this Obaseki is from Alhaji Dangote. Obaseki  is also said to be the main egg-head of the Iyamo University of which only him and Oshiomhole can tell how much of the Edo State tax payers money is in the  project. In seven months time Oshiomhole will be out of Office and his action will be subject to the judgment of posterity.

I would not know what the new government intends to do about these lootings of Edo, but all I do know is that the people will like to know  the true stories of Edo Line, Airport Road contract scam, the 40% oil derivation monies meant for the oil producing communities and the 10% of the Federal Statutory allocation for the 18 local government since 2008.

If the Igbinedion eight years in power were years of locust and a rape of democracy, they will like to know what we have we got to show for the Oshiomhole years. Today of the several segments of the economy, in the state only the taxation sector, the government can claim to have registered a hypocritical impression on the populace. This is also the same sector that is trailed with the greatest scandals.

All the state industries of Edo Line, Bendel Breweries, Edo Cement Factory, Ewu Flour Mill Oshiomhole’s administration inherited, are all grounded. Accountability made a taboo. For seven years now, Oshiomhole has  fooled Edo electorates with the pretence that he is re-constructing and rehabilitating  Federal Roads in the State at the expense of the state roads, which has earned the administration scandals than political gain it is intended. Airport road rehabilitation that would ordinarily have cost the tax payers less than N1 billion naira is now costing over N14 billion and without an end to it.

Today no one can categorically say the exact amount the Central Hospital Benin extension is costing the tax payer except Oshiomhole and perhaps Obaseki whom he has vowed to impose on his party and his successor in office. They may also wish to know the true story of the N25 Billion tax payers money  allegedly pulled from First Bank State FAC account via the Access Bank to fund the establishment of a cement factory in far away Zambia with the Dangote Group.  Is this funding for Edo State or Oshiomhole? Time will tell?

A government should have a humane face, a government that takes pride in beating confidence out of its lawmakers through intimidation, cannot not be said to be government of the people, by the people and for the people. Edo State House of Assembly has been dumb. It will amount to asking for the moon in the day light than to expect the leadership of the House of Assembly to ask Oshiomhole of corruption in the state.

It is an irony which will surprise only the naïve, when we suggest that the unyielding protagonist of this timeless Passion play in Edo State itself  Today, “The Heart Beat State” continues to stagger from one self inflicted crises to another; hence its vulnerability and the eternal instability which cost a forlorn shadow on it. Edo State has even failed the elementary test of a modern bourgeois state: For seven years now it has been unable to mediate the often conflicting interest of the factor that constitutes the ruling Oshiomhole’s administration. Charity has ended at home. (Picture: Oshiomhole and Odubu)

  • Edo Governorship Race: Why Oshiomhole’s backing Obaseki — Bello-Osagie

Edo Governorship Race: Why Oshiomhole’s backing Obaseki — Bello-Osagie

BENIN CITY—FORMER member of House of Representatives, Mr Rasaq Bello-Osagie, has said that Mr Godwin Obaseki’s credentials as a management expert was what Edo State people need as the next governor of the state.

He urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state to commend Governor Oshiomhole for his preference for Obaseki as APC governorship candidate ahead of the governorship election in the state, saying that being a politician alone cannot guarantee positive future for the people of the state, adding that those insisting that Obaseki was not a politician should have a rethink.

Bello-Osagie, who represented the people of Oredo federal constituency of Edo State from 2011 – 2015, said, “Oshiomhole was never a politician before he ran for the governorship of this state. But today, Edo State is one of the most vibrant states in the country despite its meagre resources.

“When Oshiomhole came, he constituted a team and this same Obaseki for instance, from day one, put a team together to support the governor. He supported the process to raise a strong team of professionals to help the administration of the governor. He remained in the policy cockpit of the Oshiomhole administration.

“What is needed in Edo State now as a recipe for development, not restricting the choice of candidate to those who see themselves as just politicians. We are looking for managers who can creatively manage our meagre resources for the benefit of Edo State. His antecedents as a management expert qualify him to aspire to the position of governor of Edo State. Edo State as presently constituted, in line with its own vision for the state needs a super manager not just a politician.”

  • Oshiomhole carpets PDP on ‘rice and garri’ politics

Oshiomhole carpets PDP on ‘rice and garri’ politics

As controversy rages over alleged diversion of Goodluck Jonathan campaign rice meant for distribution to the people of Edo State in the last general election by a gubernatorial aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Friday, took a swipe at the said aspirant and the PDP, saying the people of Edo State will no longer be swayed by rice and garri politics.

A chieftain of the PDP, Mr Okharedia Ihimekpen had alleged that bags of rice released by former President Goodluck Jonathan to sway votes in favour of the PDP in the last general election were not distributed and was shocked to see the portraits of a certain gubernatorial aspirant super-imposed on the bags of rice and distributed as his Christmas package last December.

Speaking at the 2016 Auchi Day celebration, on Friday, Governor Oshiomhole said politics of rice and garri was out of fashion as the people now prefer politics of development which his administration has introduced to the state in the last seven years.

Giving his scorecard to the mammoth crowd of natives of the town who thronged the palace of the Otaru, Alhaji Haliru Momoh, Ikelebe 111 and some invited guests at the Auchi Day celebration, Oshiomhole said: “the PDP Federal Government awarded the Auchi erosion contract to one of their own; in the name of Auchi erosion, they enriched themselves and abandoned even the tractor in the erosion site, compounding the erosion problem. You wrote petitions and those letters were read and ignored but we thank God for using me.

“We thank God that today, in the Auchi Erosion site, we can now locate two, three football pitches of Olympic standards in those areas that erosion had claimed.

“We have shown that government needs not lament, that government can listen and when contracts are awarded, they are meant to be done, not to provide avenue for them to deepen their pockets and use out of it to buy rice once in two years.

“I am glad that, Otaru, it will go down in the records that it was under your reign that God used us to dualise the Auchi road which your highness has kindly named Oshiomhole way and I am humbled. At night, we now can have street light in spite of the challenges of power arising from PDP mismanagement of billions of naira that was voted for power.

“As you drive here, you see red roofs of schools that Auchi children can now attend and this year before the end of my tenure your Highness, the remaining schools in Auchi will wear red roofs. We will do that because your highness, you deserve it and I will try to discharge only part of my debt obligations to you.

“Every commitment that I have made, I will do, including the ones we are already doing. We will sustain them, we will complete them before the end of my tenure. My government will never lament. When others are not paying salaries, we paid before Christmas because my task is to make things happen, not to cry.

“Edo people continue to prosper and our people will never again submit to the politics of rice and garri.”

  • Edo 2016:  Godwin Obaseki Betrays Me – Don Pedro Obaseki

Edo 2016:  Godwin Obaseki Betrays Me – Don Pedro Obaseki

A gubernatorial aspirant under the platform of the All Progressives Congress APC, in Edo state, Don Pedro Obaseki has described as shocking what he terms as ‘betrayal of trust’ on the part of his elder cousin Godwin Obaseki.

Don Pedro Obaseki said as it is typical of African tradition, he intimated his Elder cousin, Godwin Obaseki about his governorship intent only to be shocked that few months later, same Godwin has now shown same interest in running for the position

The media guru who spoke in Benin added that, though the action of his cousin who is the Edo state chairman, Economic Team will not divide the Obaseki family but said he is much accepted within the entire Obaseki’s family worldwide.

According to him “Everybody in my family is fully aware of my ambition, they are equally aware that I am seeking for the APC ticket.

“I am shocked as you are that another Obaseki is running but be that it may, this is politics. It really sounds funny and uncomfortable to many people outside.

“Me as child of tradition before I decided to run, I consulted massively with my friends and family, when am talking about my family I don’t mean my immediate family, I mean the enlarged Obaseki and to the extent that I have done two serious event to cement that announcement of my ambition.

“Before the end of next week I will release the documentary of my adoption by the family and the blessing of my family and I have equally presented my intent to the upper room elder’s council of the Obaseki for me to go ahead with my ambition. So my quest is not based on share shenanigan or a few people sitting behind the sanctuary of open doors to anoint anybody.”

‘For me I have the corporate endorsement of the Obaseki’s clan, not just the Obaseki’s clan in Nigeria but the Obaseki’s clan worldwide. Mine is not a forested ambition of one person but a collective decision of the Obaseki family.”

“You mention my elder cousin, Godwin. He is eleven years older than I am, so I give him respect in the fact that I was shocked because I have actually gone to him to beg him to lead me to the Governor so when I was told some months later that one of those I thought will be on my side was now also selling self, so let’s live the sea for the better mariner.”

  • A Tale of Two Thieves

    A Tale of Two Thieves

The showdown between Governor Adams Oshiomhole and Chief Lucky Igbinedion, both of Edo state brings to mind a small but powerful verse in one of Fela’s songs, which goes something like this, “I no bi thief, u bi thief; I no bi robber, u bi robber”.

The insult back and forth by both of them is not that money wasn’t stolen, but who stole more given the resources of the state. This is very interesting to watch, and also very cunning as most people are focused on the show rather than digesting what it all means.

Let’s examine the situation for a moment in sequence of events so we fully understand this matter.

Edo State was governed by a PDP led government under Chief Lucky Igbinedion’s administration from 1999 to 2007. As far as the people of Edo State are concerned no development whatsoever took place in the state during that time frame.

This was confirmed by the statement of the Chief-of Staff from 1999 to 2003 and Secretary to State government from 2003 to 2007, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu when “He listed the challenges to include the rot inflicted on the state by long years of military rule which left Edo State with huge liabilities, the ruling party which produced the governor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the small finances that was available to the state as at the time Igbinedion was governor.

He also stated that the PDP backed the poor performance of former Governor Igbinedion because “it had no manifesto, blueprint or plan for governance and in Edo State was actually personified by one lead character that was literally worshipped as the owner and giver of political power.”” Published June 10, 2013

In many other instances, he claimed not to have knowledge of how the finances were spent, even though as the SSG all files must pass through his desk for approval. He joined Oshiomhole to rubbish the PDP and stated during campaign that the PDP was a failure; never did he try to defend an administration he was part of.

As poor as the state was and unable to meet up with the demands, we all knew that the then Governor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion spent most of his time out of the country, spending the states scarce resources on trip to different countries where he lavished our treasury on parties, imported girls, and shopping. It is also not news that the then labour leader Adams Oshiomhole escorted him on many of those trips opening his eyes to money laundering and excesses while remaining silent. It was the agreement never to probe the Lucky Igbinedion administration that got him the right to contest for governor in 2007 on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). It is also believed that Governor Oshiomhole also agreed then that upon leaving office he will hand over to Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

So Governor Oshiomhole prompted us to the dual carriage way from the Lagos Express Road to Okada for which N2 billion (Two billion Naira) was paid to Bright Igbinedion’s company. This project was never executed. Is the state not entitled to a refund and the culprits brought to book?

The abandoned Ava Cement company in AKoko-Edo which was established with the sum of $31 million (Thirty-One Million Dollars) stolen from Edo State treasury. This fund was never appropriated by the House Assembly, neither was it discussed in the state executive council and the company is owned privately by Igbinedion and Fashanu. This is stealing o. The money should be returned or the abandoned project ceased and auctioned to recover the money, and returned to the state treasury. Government land and property sold to the the Igbinedion family for pennies and much more.

Governor Oshiomhole boasted that he will drag Chief Lucky Igbinedion to the EFCC. Chief Lucky Igbinedion exposed Governor Oshiomhole of his Estate in South African purchased with Edo State treasury from which the state does not benefit, Commercial property in Dubai, A hospital in the United States for his son, a penthouse in Atlanta next to Chief Lucky Igbinedion’s penthouse, homes in California, Abuja, Kano and the Ten billion naira home in Iyamoh and some investments in his wife’s home country.

Is it blackmail or is it pay-off that has suddenly made these two silent. Haba, all this money fought over is it not our State money meant to develop the state? Now Governor Oshiomhole will see it fit to tax the people three times over to cover for money stolen from us.

This is where it gets very interesting. Let us not forget that Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has always denied being a participant in Chief Lucky Igbinedion’s administration one which he calls a failure. He also claimed that he did not have any powers or control over what the governor did. However, earlier this year 2015 he choose to render an apology to the people of Edo State and this was his statement as published.

“According to the report, Osagie Ize-Iyamu asked Edo people to “forgive me for being one of those in the forefront that brought Mr. Oshiomhole to be the governor of the state. We now know who he is. Therefore, in the coming elections, Edo people should not repeat the mistake of the past”.”

We wonder how a “NOBODY” had the powers to install a governor in our state. But one thing is sure Edo people should not repeat the mistake of the past.

This is why, the failed then governor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion stated that he was going to decide who the next governor was going to be, and well we are yet to know on what grounds he stands on to make that decision, since all he does is fail. All failing and thieving and no progress.

We know who he is supporting by his statement which reads, “Whoever is going to be the next governor of Edo State must be one of the founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state. And must also be a member of the ‘family’”, he said.

He went on to tip Ize-Iyamu for the governorship race and rated him ahead of other contestants in the race.” Published July 2015.

Is Edo State now a family business? NO, it is not and we have had enough. But What Chief Lucky Igbinedion and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu have unmistakably alerted us to, is that they have controlled the State for fifteen years with nothing but theft and failures and the timid people of Edo State should give them another 8 years.

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu functioned in the failed 8 years of the PDP led administration governed by Chief Lucky Igbinedion from 1999 to 2007, Installed a failed ACN/APC led administration governed by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole from 2008 to Present, back tracked to PDP to install himself as governor for another 8 years. Since everything Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu is involved in is a failure on what foundation of good governance does he stand on to run for the number one position of the State. A man who never takes responsibility for his failings can never be trusted and does not mean well for the good people of Edo State. Does the PDP now have a manifesto, blueprint and plan just because he is running. The grand-father and supreme chopper wants direct access to the chopping.

Governor Oshiomhole on the other hand is hell bent on producing the next governor, and as it has been rumoured his mind is made up on Mr. Godwin Obaseki, which information has it that he has been the one helping Governor Oshiomhole in securing unpaid loans, moving Edo State monies in the billions for investment into the Dangote groups and laundering of our states funds. All of this earned Obaseki the lead on the State’s economic team. Sadly the state benefits nothing and the people continue to wallow in poverty. Oh yes, while the thieving and chopping continues.

All we have heard is “na u thief pass me”. I no thief reach u”. We as Edo People must free ourselves from this sham. Remember there are some mistakes that take a life time to correct.

In this next election for the governor’s seat in 2016 we must be wise to vote for someone who can administer Edo state, brings goodwill to its people and doesn’t see it as a family business.
